Right to Repair

Statement

Once we pay money for a product, we want to have full control over the things we own. Unfortunately, many manufacturers have decided that they can retain control over products, even after they have been bought. This is an issue known as “Right to Repair”, where anyone should be able to use their product and fix their product as they wish. If you can’t fix it, you don’t own it, is the mantra of people trying to fight for the rights of consumers.

Many that are fighting for the “Right to Repair” are trying to end restrictive end user agreements known as EULA’s. Others are trying to stop companies from making proprietary service manuals.

To protect consumer’s rights, it is important that everyone is aware of the current situation. In the United States, only 33 states have passed bills that protect repairing rights. Even though many states have passed such bills, without all the states passing similar laws, many manufacturers will continue using their power against consumers.

Repairing items is necessary for our society, this helps our environment and local businesses. The less we buy, the less we pollute our environment. Reducing the amount of garbage we produce has a higher impact than just recycling. Having local repair shop businesses allow our communities to grow. There is a lot that everyone can gain by having the right to repair the products we own. Manufacturers can still make money by producing the replacement parts that are needed. Our society as a whole benefits from this Right.
